SEO for adult sites
What's different from normal SEO, why the long tail is the whole game, and how link building actually works in this niche.
Adult SEO is normal SEO with a lower ceiling and a stranger link graph. The fundamentals — crawlable pages, fast load, real content, internal linking, a clean site — all still apply. What changes is where the traffic can come from and how you earn links.
Google treats adult as its own environment
- SafeSearch. A large share of users have SafeSearch on by default (all logged-in minors, many work and mobile networks). Those users never see your pages for explicit queries. You are competing for the SafeSearch-off audience only.
- No Google Ads. You cannot buy your way in. Every visit is organic, referral, or direct.
- Its own ranking environment. Adult queries return a different, quieter result set. Domain authority still matters, but the bar to rank for a mid-tail term is lower than in a mainstream niche because fewer capable sites are competing.
- Demotion, not exclusion. Google indexes adult sites fully. It just ranks them conservatively and rarely shows them for ambiguous queries.
The practical result: head terms are owned by the incumbents and not worth chasing. The long tail is wide open.
Win the long tail
The queries that convert and that a new site can actually rank for:
- "best [niche] porn sites" — the classic directory query. Commercial intent, weak competition outside the top few directories.
- "[site] vs [site]" — comparison queries. Almost nobody builds these well.
- "is [site] safe" / "[site] review" — trust queries, often searched after a bad experience.
- "[niche] porn sites without ads / without signup / that work on mobile" — qualified queries the big tubes cannot answer about themselves.
- "[site] alternative" / "sites like [site]" — searched when a favourite goes down or turns hostile.
- Language-specific versions of all of the above. The non-English long tail is barely contested.
Build a page per intent, answer the question in the first paragraph, back it with something the incumbents do not have (measured data, a real comparison table, a genuine editorial opinion), and keep the internal linking dense so the crawler finds all of it.
The link graph is small and specific
You will not get links from mainstream sites — they avoid linking to adult domains. The links available to you:
- Directories. The ThePornDude / ThePornGuy ecosystem, plus dozens of smaller ones. Getting listed is the single highest-value link in the niche. Most listings are traded, paid, or earned by being genuinely useful. A submission tool and patient outreach is the standard approach.
- Other operators. Adult webmasters link to tools, data, and guides that help them. This is why an ad-load report or a set of operator guides earns links that a listicle never will.
- Forums. GFY (GoFuckYourself) is the main adult webmaster forum; there are others. Contextual links from a real account with history.
- Your own network. If you run more than one property, cross-link carefully and sparingly.
- The "new site every week" tactic. Directories want fresh listings; being the site they add this week is a link. This only works if the site is real.
Buying links at scale in this niche is common and risky — the footprints are obvious and a manual action wipes months of work. A slow, mixed profile is worth more than a fast, spammy one.
Technical notes specific to adult
- `rating` meta and `RTA` label. Add
<meta name="rating" content="adult">and the RTA (RTA-5042-1996-1400-1577-RTA) label so filters classify you correctly. This does not hurt SEO and helps you avoid being blocked by the wrong systems. - Cloak affiliate links. Outbound affiliate links should be
rel="sponsored nofollow"and ideally routed through an internal redirect (/go/…) that isnoindex. This protects your link profile and lets you measure clicks. - Screenshot, don't hotlink. If you show what a site looks like, use your own screenshot. Hotlinking their media is a bandwidth theft complaint waiting to happen and adds nothing for SEO.
- Keep the discovery long tail `noindex`. If you track thousands of domains you have not reviewed, do not let Google index those thin pages — they drag the whole site's quality signal down. Index only the pages you have actually done work on.
The realistic timeline
Six months of near-zero, then a slow compound as pages age and links accrue. Adult SEO rewards patience and punishes shortcuts harder than most niches, because the link graph is small enough that spam is easy to spot.
